MORNING SESSIONS

Self-Compassion for Therapists: Caring for others without losing yourself

dr-kristin-neff-self-compassion-co-creator-author-associate-preofessor-live-ce-trainingLed by Dr. Kristin Neff

Self-compassion involves treating ourselves kindly, like we would a close friend we cared about. Rather than continually judging and evaluating ourselves, self-compassion involves generating kindness toward ourselves as imperfect humans, and learning to be present with the inevitable struggles of life with greater ease. This workshop will present theory and research on the crucial role that self-compassion plays for therapists to reduce burnout. A variety of practices will be taught that can help individuals maintain balance in difficult situations with clients. We will also reconnect with our core values as professional caregivers.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the components and main benefits of self-compassion
  2. Distinguish between empathy fatigue and compassion fatigue
  3. Identity the link between self-compassion, stress, and burnout
  4. Apply self-compassion in professional caregiving contexts

AFTERNOON SESSIONS

Self-Compassion for Clients: Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment

dr-janina-fisher-live-ce-training-trauma-informed-treatment-author-trainerLed by Dr. Janina Fisher

Clients may get stuck with their traumatized parts because these parts hold unresolved emotions and beliefs that have not been processed or integrated. These parts can be activated in the present moment, causing distress, impulsivity, and interfering with daily functioning. Additionally, clients may struggle with self-compassion and may have developed phobias or resistance towards certain aspects of themselves related to the trauma. Dr. Fisher’s approach focuses on understanding and working with these traumatized parts, helping clients develop compassion and empathy towards themselves to experience healing and growth, allowing them to move forward.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the concept of fragmentation in trauma and its impact on survival.
  2. Differentiate and recognize distress and impulsivity as manifestations of traumatized parts.
  3. Apply mindfulness-based awareness techniques to gain insight into trauma-related parts and their impact.
  4. Recognize the significance of repetition and consistency in healing and integrating traumatized parts.
  5. Cultivate curiosity and interest as tools to enhance self-compassion and combat self-rejection and trauma-related phobias.
  6. Develop strategies to approach and meet hostile and resistant parts with compassion and empathy.
